Organization’s Objective
While the landscape in NC has shifted dramatically over the past few years, exemplified by the recent election of a long-time environmental champion as Speaker of the House, sound environmental policy-making is by no means guaranteed. Our opponents, wielding disproportionate resources and influence, consistently outspend and out-maneuver the environmental community, resulting in weak or detrimental environmental policies. Our “wins” on specific policies are often the result of individual and disjointed campaigns that do not reflect a long-term strategy. We are one of the fastest growing states in the nation, facing increasing environmental pressures, and are experiencing a shift in leadership at the General Assembly from our traditional eastern Democratic majority to a more urban, Republican legislature.
Recognizing that we are faced with increasingly powerful opposition that regularly outspends environmental advocates and that significant political partisanship will continue to deter sound environmental policy-making, building the long-term collective power of the environmental community is critical.
