About Faithful Democrats

Leadership

Jesse Lava

Co-founder and Director

Jesse directed the development of FaithfulDemocrats.com and now oversees day-to-day operations. Previously, he served as Special Assistant to former Democratic National Committee Chair David Wilhelm and worked as a writer and strategist for Wilhelm's public affairs firm. Jesse was also a campaign staffer on U.S. Senator Tim Johnson's re-election effort in South Dakota in 2002 and Jody Richards's bid for Kentucky Governor in 2003.

Eric Sapp

Senior Advisor

Eric Sapp is Senior Partner at Common Good Strategies, a faith-based political consulting firm for Democratic candidates. Prior to joining CGS, Eric worked in Rep. David Price's (NC-04) D.C. office, where he handled faith and politics, budget, tax, and homeland security issues and was responsible for Orange County and Duke/Chapel Hill campus outreach during the 2004 election. Before that, he worked as an aide on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. He also served as part-time Director of Christian Education at Heritage Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, VA where he is currently an elder.

Organization’s Objective

Millions of American Christians believe their faith requires them to move in lockstep with the Republican Party. Only 26% of Americans believe Democrats are "friendly to religion" (Pew, 8/06) and 69% say Democrats have gone too far in keeping religion out of government (Pew, 8/06). Like it or not, these trends are keeping people from voting Democratic: a July, 2005, Pew poll shows that a voter's perception of how friendly a party is to religion ends up being a better predictor of one's vote than almost anything else -- gender, education, even political ideology (Pew, 7/05). That means Democrats need to turn this perception around in order to win over more devout Christian voters -- despite the polls (too numerous to mention here) suggesting that the decisive majority of Americans agree with the Democrats on most political issues.
