About Progressive States Network

Leadership

Joel Barkin

Executive Director

Joel is a veteran political operative with both legislative and non-profit experience. He recently left the office of New York State Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat. Prior to working with Espaillat, Joel served as Communications Director and Special Advisor to Congressman Bernie Sanders (I-VT). Joel has worked on a number of campaigns and progressive initiatives. He has also worked in the Communications Department for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).

Nathan Newman

Policy Director

Nathan, a lawyer and Ph.D., has an extensive history of supporting local policy campaigns, from coalition organizing work to drafting legislation. Previous to coming to Progressive States, he was Associate Counsel at the Brennan Center for Justice, Program Director of NetAction's Consumer Choice Campaign, co-director of the UC-Berkeley Center for Community Economic Research, and a labor and employment lawyer. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School and his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of California at Berkeley and has written extensively about public policy and the legal system in a range of academic and popular journals.

Organization’s Objective

Over the last few decades, corporate interests and right-wing think tanks such as the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) have largely dominated state politics, using a combination of financial power and wedge issues to encourage divisiveness and cynicism among the general population. In contrast, progressives have historically lacked the same kind of cohesive network. Often progressives find themselves reinventing the wheel; even when progressives in one state notch a big victory, progressives in other states don’t know how to easily reproduce it. With Progressive States, state legislators regularly receive resources to advance policies that protect individual freedoms, strengthen America’s working families, and promote a healthy environment. We run issue campaigns and seed simultaneous policy efforts in the states, providing state legislators with all of the support and materials they need to create solid progressive policies and pass them into law. These materials, which include everything from sample bills to talking points and hard data, can be applied with minor adjustments essentially anywhere in the nation.
